According to the most recent figures, 1,275 newly eligible Culpeper residents have signed up for Medicaid since Jan. 1, with many receiving health insurance for the first time in many years, per the expansion approved last year by the Virginia General Assembly.

County-wide, an estimated 1,900 residents meet the new income guidelines to receive Medicaid coverage, meaning more than half have already enrolled.

At the same time, demand for medical services among the uninsured continues to build at the Free Clinic of Culpeper, which is seeing about five new patients per week, according to Director Chris Miller. It’s been bittersweet seeing a number of former Free Clinic patients get Medicaid and move on, she added, but the good news overall is that fewer people than ever should now be without healthcare.
